Cleaning Tip: When to Disinfect

Many people use these Clorox disinfectant wipes or even Seventh Generation wipes as cleaning wipes rather than disinfectant wipes. For instance, I love having a wipe in my kids bathrooms for them to use after they have brushed their teeth and left gunk in the sink. Or when there is too much hair on the bathroom counter after some teenage hairstyle has gone on. So if you need just a wipe to clean something up with, use a water wipe, or baby wipe, or multi purpose wipe, rather than a disinfectant wipe filled with chemicals. (And, yes, I know I can just use a Norwex cloth... which I do for cleaning and disinfecting, but when my kids are in a hurry for school, a wipe is much easier to clean up their mess with).
.
The Clorox and 7th generation wipes are full of chemicals to disinfect. But in order to disinfect correctly, you have to keep the wipe on the area for around 4-10 mins (depending on which brand). Most people just wipe down the surface within a few seconds. All this is doing is rubbing chemicals around on your surface. It’s not actually disinfecting.
.
While cleaning removes germs from a surface, disinfecting kills them by using antimicrobial pesticides, such as quaternary ammonium compounds or “quats.”
.
Love this quote form the EWG... “Determine whether you need to clean or disinfect. Clean surfaces regularly to remove germs and prevent them from growing or spreading. You should still disinfect surfaces that have contact with raw meat, blood or bodily fluids, and when a family member suffers from a contagious illness, such as the flu. When you need to disinfect, use products properly. Not only can overuse of disinfectants breed superbugs, inappropriate use may not kill bacteria, exposing your family to harmful chemicals without the germ-destroying benefit.”
.
🌟So the EWG is not completely against the 👎🏻products above. They encourage you to only use when truly disinfecting. And to use a different option (like a multi purpose wipe) when cleaning germs. When I need to disinfect, I use my Norwex cloths and an all-purpose cleaner mentioned in the post before.
