Back to School-Snacks for Those Allergies

🏫Back to School - snacks for those with allergies.
.
I’m so excited to co-write this post with the allergy expert @theallergychef.
.
Did you know 5.6 million children have food allergies which is roughly 2 per classroom! About 40 percent of kids with food allergies are allergic to more than 1 food. (1)

The US Top 8 Allergens are: Cows milk, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, shellfish, wheat, soybeans, and fish (2). The US is currently considering adding sesame as number 9. Some countries recognize up to 14 major allergens, however, you can be allergic (or intolerant) to anything.
.
There are 2 big problems when trying to find allergy free food:

1️⃣Cross contamination - Many people think that if the allergic person just avoids the allergen, they will be fine. It can be more complicated than that and someone suffering from a food allergy also has to be aware of cross contamination (trace amounts of a food allergen coming into contact with their food) in order to prevent an allergic reaction. (3). Trace amounts can be introduced during the transportation of raw materials, storage of ingredients, and sharing of a facility or manufacturing equipment. Fortunately, some food manufacturers make their products on dedicated equipment or even in an allergen free facility and label their food accordingly.
.
2️⃣Other ingredients - when the top 8 common food allergens are not used, other ingredients that may not be the best option are used in their place. You might find artificial sweeteners, gmo crops, glyphosate sprayed oats and almonds, trans fat oils, and a lot of unnecessary fillers. All which are on @just.ingredients 👎🏻 list.

Thankfully, there are companies that manufacture on dedicated allergen free equipment and are concerned about their ingredients. All of the food products shown are top 8 allergen free, made from companies that use dedicated equipment and are concerned about using cleaner ingredients👏🏻👏🏻
