Back to School-Lunch Meat

šŸ«Back to School - Lunch meats .
There are so many IG sites saying not to even eat deli meats on sandwiches, but my kids love turkey, roast beef, and ham sandwiches as an option as well. Yes, they love the seed and nut butters with honey, cinnamon, or jam, but especially the older teens, like the meat.
.
A few things to try to avoid in deli meat:
.
āŒSugar - especially those labeled as sugar rather than cane sugar. Cane sugar is not a gmo crop. When listed as sugar, it most likely comes from sugar beets, a gmo crop. And it does not need sugar. We have too many foods with unnessary added sugar.
.
āŒCarrageenan - many deli meats contain this and its an extra filler thatā€™s not needed. The FDA has approved it safe. But many scientists believe it can cause inflammation, digestive problems, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, and colon cancer (1).
.
āŒNitrates - oh what a debate this is. Here is the basic scoop. Nitrates exist in fruits and vegetables. They can be good for our bodies. Nitrates turn to nitrites. From nitrites they turn either into nitric oxide or nitrosamines. Nitro oxide is good for your blood and blood vessels. Nitrosamines are carcinogenic and the problem. Nitrosamines are formed when nitrates are heated and in the presence of amino acids (which the protein in the meat has the amino acids).
.
But, then what about the nitrates in celery salt used to preserve these meats? Celery salt has naturally occurring nitrates. It also has naturally occurring vitamin C. The vitamin C neutralizes the nitrates from turning into nitrosamines. (2)
.
āŒAdded hormones - this is only a concern in the beef deli meats. USDA has made it clear that no hormones are allowed in the raising of any poultry. Pigs are not given them either.
.
āŒArtificial caramel color - Caramel color has 4-methylimidazole in it. In 2007 the federal government ordered a study on this chemical and the outcome was that it caused cancer in mice. The government claims it to be a ā€œpossible carcinogenic.ā€ This 4-meth ingredient is one of the chemicals California requires a cancer warning sign on it if thereā€™s more than 29g of it.
