3 Problems with Candles

As with any product, you don’t need to deprive yourself of candles. Or worry about the candles you’ve had in the past. Just be educated so you can buy the better choice candles next time.
There are 3 main problems with candles. The:
1. Wax
2. Wicks
3. Fragrance
A lot of scented candles are made with paraffin. The oil by-product gives off ultra-fine soot particles containing acetone, benzene and toluene. The EPA has classified benzene as known human carcinogen for all routes of exposure.
A study was done by South Carolina State University that states “The paraffin candles we tested released unwanted chemicals into the air. For a person who lights a candle every day for years or just uses them frequently, inhalation of these dangerous pollutants drifting in the air could contribute to the development of health risks like cancer, common allergies and even asthma.”
This same study states “None of the vegetable-based candles produced toxic chemicals.” 👏🏻👏🏻
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “candle with a lead-core wick releases five times the amount of lead considered hazardous for children and exceeds EPA pollution standards for outdoor air.” Exposure to high amounts of lead has been linked to hormone disruption, behavioral problems, learning disabilities, and numerous health problems.
Here’s the thing, the US banned in 2003 lead wicks. 👏🏻👏🏻BUT, many candles purchased are imported and still may have lead wicks. So if you’re buying online or even some discounted stores, make sure you know where your candle is coming from.
According to the Children’s Environmental Health Network, “Many synthetic chemicals in fragrances are derived from petrochemicals (petroleum-based). Chemicals found in man-made fragrances include phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors, and benzene derivatives, aldehydes, and toluene, which are known carcinogens.”
Wax made from beeswax, coconut, non gmo soy, hemp, or vegetable base with no added paraffin. 100% cotton or paper wick. And one scented from natural sources. And of course, organic is even better. Purchase at Walmart, Target, Amazon, Etsy, & more.
